Jeremy Goldstein: Lion of the Law

Dealing with legal issues is frustrating, and often leaves one with more questions than answers.  Thankfully, the Bar Association of New York has created a tool that relieves some of the burden; they have provided the people of New York with The New York State Bar Association Trusted Lawyer Referral and Information service (LRIS.) This online, confidential service is available 24-hours per day at https://nybalris.legal.io  and compliments the telephone service already in place for over three decades. This is a helpful alternative can be reached during regular business hours at 1-800-342-3661.

Choosing a lawyer is overwhelming and time-consuming.  LRIS simplifies the process by easily matching an individual with the perfect lawyer to effectively represent their situation.  As stated by Claire Gutekunst, State Bar President, “Individuals often need lawyers in times of stress. Our Lawyer Referral and Information Service is a lower-pressure way to get legal help. Individuals can have the confidence that they will be matched.” Echoing her sentiments is Tony Lai, CEO of Legal.io and partners with LRIS, “We are proud to partner with one of the largest associations of lawyers in the world to redefine how lawyers can scale the delivery of legal services to a greater number of people at a lower cost, and to create the trusted, go-to online destination for consumers and businesses seeking to rely on New York law, all around the world.”

The LRIS website works very simply.  The person looking for an attorney goes to the website and fills out a confidential form describing their legal dilemma, and where they are located. Upon reviewing the questionnaire, the staff will match the person with a near-by lawyer. If the individual lives in any of the 17 counties that has a local referral program, the State Bar will forward the request to the correct bar association for that county. This is a free referral service, however when the person talks with the attorney, there’s a $35 fee for an initial 30-minute consultation (not applicable to cases involving unemployment/worker’s compensation, personal injury, medical malpractice, social securing and cases involving veterans or military law.) Upon completion of the first consultation, the individual is not obligated to retain the attorney.  However, if the lawyer is chosen to represent them, all costs are discussed between the attorney and client.

This service not only empowers the public, but also grows the practices of many attorneys serving New York.  According to Elena Tastensen, a Sarasota Springs lawyer serving as chair of the Association’s Committee on Lawyer Referral, “The carefully screened client referrals, coupled with the new online technology, also will help attorneys serve additional clients; The Lawyer Referral and Information Service really helped me grow my practice”
