The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is an organization that was formed with the aim of providing those who have been wronged in the society and those who have been discriminated against. The group was funded with the settlement money that Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were given following an incident that shed light on the injustices that were taking place in the legal system in the country.
Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin were initially writers living in Phoenix Arizona. Together, the duo had founded the Village Voice, a weekly publication exclusive to the city of Phoenix. The newspaper would cover various happenings in the city.
At the time, Joe Arpaio was the sheriff of Maricopa County and was known to be one of America’s toughest sheriffs. However, Joe Arpaio had numerous controversies surrounding him, and the injustices that he had done. He was known to discriminate against people coming from Latin America openly, and would often bribe the jury into enforcing a harsh punishment on people belonging to these ethnicities.
Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin decided to publish an article about this in their newspaper, and the following day were arrested and taken from their homes in the middle of the night. They were put in two separate vans and were taken to two different holding facilities, without being told what they were arrested for, and without being told where they were being taken to. They were kept in these holding facilities for forty-eight hours and were then released.
They soon learned that Joe Arpaio himself was the one that had warranted the arrests, and wanted to keep them behind bars for what they wrote. Since he was in fact in the wrong for arresting them, Mike and Jim decided to sue him for three million dollars for abusing his power as the Sheriff. They were offered a settlement, and instead of keeping the money for themselves decided to put it to good use to ensure that this kind of thing never happens again.
The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund tries its best to reach out to people and organizations across the country, to help them preserve and establish their fundamental rights. The fund also seeks to help those organizations that are on their way to exposing the injustices happening in the government and the legal systems in the country.
Since people from minority communities in the country are the ones who are victims of these crimes, the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund tries its best to help them, and provide them with the resources to fight their case if they are ever wrongly arrested by people in positions of power.
The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund has been instrumental in ensuring that the rights of migrant workers in the country are adequately maintained. The organization tries its best to educate the people about the various aspects of ethnic communities and the countries surrounding the United States so that individuals who are averse to these communities can realize that they are just as human as every one of them.
